Modern India Timeline — 1757 to 1947
✨ IN SHORT — THE WHOLE LESSON IN 20 SECONDS
Modern India is one story in 8 dates: 1757 Plassey → 1857 Revolt → 1885 Congress → 1905 Bengal Partition → 1919 Jallianwala → 1930 Dandi → 1942 Quit India → 1947 Freedom. Nail these in order and hundreds of MCQs fall.
1. How British Rule Began (1757–1857)
Battle of Plassey (1757): Robert Clive defeated Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah — political power in Bengal began changing hands. Battle of Buxar (1764) confirmed it. In 1857 came the First War of Independence (Sepoy Revolt), starting at Meerut; heroes include Mangal Pandey, Rani Lakshmibai, Tantia Tope. India then passed from Company to British Crown (1858).
📌 Order trick: Plassey 57, Buxar 64, Revolt 57 — '57-64-57' sandwich of the 1700s/1800s.
2. Congress & Bengal Partition (1885–1911)
Indian National Congress founded 1885 (A.O. Hume; first session Bombay, president W.C. Banerjee). In 1905 Lord Curzon partitioned Bengal — the Swadeshi Movement answered with boycott of foreign goods. Partition was annulled in 1911 and the capital shifted from Calcutta to Delhi.
💡 Trick: 1905 = Bengal cut, 1911 = Bengal rejoined + capital to Delhi. Examiners pair these two forever.
3. The Freedom Struggle Peaks (1919–1947)
Jallianwala Bagh massacre 1919 (General Dyer, Amritsar). Non-Cooperation Movement 1920 (Gandhi) — withdrawn after Chauri Chaura (1922). Dandi March / Salt Satyagraha 1930. Quit India Movement 1942 ('Do or Die'). Independence + Partition: 15 August 1947; first PM Jawaharlal Nehru, first President (1950) Dr. Rajendra Prasad, first Governor-General of India Lord Mountbatten; C. Rajagopalachari was the first Indian Governor-General.
📌 Date ladder: 19 (massacre) → 20 (non-cooperation) → 30 (Dandi) → 42 (quit) → 47 (free). Gaps: 1, 10, 12, 5.
