Child Development — How Children Grow & Learn (TET)
✨ IN SHORT — THE WHOLE LESSON IN 20 SECONDS
Pedagogy = the science of teaching children. Development = growth in body, mind, language, emotion & social skills together. TET loves Piaget (thinking stages) and the rule: teach from known to unknown, concrete to abstract.
1. Growth vs Development
Growth = physical increase (height/weight), stops after a stage, measurable. Development = overall change (skills, thinking, behaviour), continues lifelong, qualitative. Principles: development follows a pattern (head-to-toe: baby controls head before walking), proceeds from general to specific, and every child has individual differences — no two children learn identically.
📌 Heredity (born traits) × Environment (surroundings) together shape the child — both matter, always.
2. Piaget's 4 Stages of Thinking
1) Sensorimotor (0–2 yrs): learns through senses & actions; object permanence appears. 2) Pre-operational (2–7): language grows, thinking is self-centred (egocentric), cannot conserve quantity yet. 3) Concrete Operational (7–11): logical thinking with real objects, understands conservation (same water, tall glass). 4) Formal Operational (11+): abstract & hypothetical reasoning.
💡 Trick: Ages '2-7-11' are the stage gates — S(0-2) P(2-7) C(7-11) F(11+). Most TET questions are solved by matching the child's age.
3. How Good Teaching Works
Child-centred education: start from what the child knows (known→unknown), use real objects before symbols (concrete→abstract), learning by doing (activity-based), continuous assessment without fear (CCE idea), inclusive classroom: children with special needs learn WITH others (RPWD Act spirit, RTE 2009: free & compulsory education for 6–14 years).
📌 RTE Act 2009: no detention policy context, pupil-teacher ratio norms, 25% EWS seats in private schools (Section 12).
